Production Reflection

What were the main strengths of your production phase?

I think as a team we had many strengths one would be that i think that as a group we worked well and could communicate well as we all know where to be and when. Also if we had a problem we made a group decision and then would reschedule to make it more suitable for example we were meant to meet at five o clock on Saturday but then it was rescheduled till 6 as i was held up elsewhere.

Another strength was that i was really happy with where we had decided to film because the house which we filmed at had a lot of space this meant me being able to put the camera in various places and experimenting with different shots and i was really happy as i was able to do shot in detail of the person walking up the stairs, this made it look more professional i believe. We also very lucky as we had completed all the shots which we were meant to.

What challenges did you face during the production phase?

One challenge we faced was the props as when we were doing the pre-production we thought one of the team member had the prop which we needed but he could not find it as he did not use it for a while, this meant us having to go any purchase the prop as a group, this meant that we slightly behind schedule as we had to go shops but as a group we decided to stay back and finish the shots which we had agreed to.

Another challenge we had was that when we were recording the battery of the camera ran out, this meant us not being able to record until it was charged this was a group fault as we should have checked before hand, however we managed to charge it in the house we were filming and then after a short break we went back to recording this had impacted the whole group as time was wasted but as a group we manage to complete all the shots on the day.

What changes did you make from your planning? Why did you changes these things? What was the impact of the changes?

Changes which we had made where due to the locations which we had recorded at, on the script our group had decided that the victim will be on the computer or seated towards a screen but due to the size of the bedroom it meant me not being able to have both people in the same shot, this meant us having to change the scene as we had decided to make the victim should stand up near the door on the phone as it would be more suitable as i could record them both this would look a lot better visually as it gives more detail i believe.

Another change we had made was when the antagonist was walking to the protagonist house as we were meant to have an over shoulder shot but because it was the night it was very bad visibility as the antagonist was wearing a black hoodie this made it extra difficult to see the over shoulder shot this is why we had just used long shots from different position. This allowed us to see the antagonist walking to the house made it a lot more visible.

What improvements would you make to your production process if you were to do it again?

Improvements i would personally make is that i would change the second leading actor who is Rayhan because i think he does not look like a character who would bully people as he looks a lot more civilised then who the character was meant to be, by having a person who look a bit more rough and spoke differently it would have given it a better feel as it would have made it look more realistic. Another improvement i would make is the setting as the setting was set the same vibe it was meant to as it look like Rayhan lived well and had a good life, however we were trying to show that he was more rough and against the law, by changing the location i believe that it would have created a better vibe and more of the audience would have believed the story line more.

Proposal for The Hit

Plot (Storyline)

The story of our short ultra movie is a person who has now started to seek revenge on behalf of his sister as she has been shamed on social media which lead her to commuting   suicide. We start the film with Riz looking for his sister in the house, then we see a note on his sisters bed. We hear her voice reading the note then it will go to scene where see Riz getting ready to go into the house of the person who bullied his sister. We know that he is unexpected when the victim does not know why he is being attacked then all is revealed in good time after they have a conversation we see at the end the person has a knife on his hand ready.

What is the Genre

The genre we want to create is crime and thriller because we believe that the story line involves crime as we see the antagonist breaking in to the house, picking the front door locks. We also see Thriller element in our short ultra movie because we see crime being involved as the antagonist wants to kill the person who has lead to his sister dying. We see a element of action as well when the antagonist punches the victim.

Who are your characters

The first character we have chosen is called Riz, Riz is an young energetic person who is only 18 years old and is very clever achieving 6 A in all is gcse but now wants to risk his future for the love of his sister, he wants to attack the person who cyber bullied his sister.

The victim is a young 16 year old who is called Ray, he has many regrets in life one would be the fact that he bullied people online, he has been known to the police with his background. He thought everything would have been over after all the court cases but no he has now have to deal with the brother of the sister he bullied.
.
What is your setting?

The setting is the gritty East London where Reggie Krays from, many dangerous things happen in these areas, Riz and Ray are from Ilford and they both live with the parents. It will be located around the Goodmayes area We have set it in this modern era because we want to relate to the young audience and send a positive message.

How will your film incorporate all the section A techniques

We will use continuity editing technique when antagonist approaches slowly to the house, this is when we can edit to the picking the lock. We also will use montage editing when Ray gets punched on the face then he has a concussion, this is where we get images of his childhood. 180 degree rule and shot reverse shot will be at the end of the movie when both of the characters sit opposite to each other in the bedroom and Ray is tied up on the chair. We will also use a cut transition when Riz breaks through the door of the house then runs up the stairs and then will cut to him being at the bedroom door.

How will your film incorporate all the section B techniques

We will use a jump cut sequence because at the beginning of the scene we will see the antagonist getting ready to attack by putting on the gloves, hoodie and balaclava, this will have five shots. We will also use point of view shot when RIz punches Ray as it shows it in a lot more detail. Motivated cut will be used when Riz pick locks the door then will have a motivated cut where the camera is inside then shows him entering the house.  At the end of the short film we will have the scene where the antagonist shows the knife and then the shot goes blank it cuts to the soundtrack.

Purposes of editing case study: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Storytelling

Storytelling is important as it is a purpose of editing, storytelling used as an editing technique to show more information, by this i mean it reveals the information in a specific style or order.

We see them use a convention which is a part of story telling this can be the fact that we see them use a an editing technique which shows us that they are withholding information from the audience, with-holding information is a purpose of storytelling as it builds attention for the audience, for example in above at 7.46 the audience actually find out that there was no bullet in the gun this information was not given to the audience. By with-holding information it means that the audience would be shocked as they did not know that the gun was unloaded, also it creates attention because when Tuco wants to shoot nothing happens but the audience thought had shot someone.

Another editing technique we see to tell us the story is the fact that they use shot reverse shot in the film to show us a conversation between Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cliff this happens at 0.19-0.25 because the shot starts off with Lee Van Cliff then we see Clint Eastwood then the camera goes back to Lee Van Cliff. By using shot reverse shot it allows the audience to see the audiences lip when they are speaking and also the facial expression allows the audience to know if they are saying it in a serious or humorous way.

As you can see above the clothing plays a big part on how story telling as at 4.49 we see Clint Eastwood is dressed very western as he is wearing a cowboy hat, this tells us it is set around the western times. This has an effect on the audience because it informs the audience that what period they have gone back to and it also separates the audience because some people may be young and they know they would not like it as it is a western film.

Combining shots and into sequences

Combining shots and into sequences is an purpose of editing as it allows the scenes to flow between the different the scenes.

180 degree rule

We see the 180 degree rule being used at 4:26 the we see shot reverse being used as well in the clip above, this helps the audience see the characters face and reaction on their face, it also allows the audience to see where they are standing in position and it makes it a lot more easy for the audience to know who's the enemy because of the shots. By combining shots it allows the audience to see in greater detail and also it keeps the audience entertained in a way because it counts as filler shots.

Seamless/ continuity

At 6:59 we see the continuity being used in the good, the bad and the ugly, we see this when Clint East shots his enemy and in between him shooting we see the change of shot when the other scene continues in between.Seamless editing is done so that it is more entertaining for the audience to see the action when it is going on, it keeps the audience more focus on the specific action.

Creating pace

Cutting to the soundtrack

Cutting to the beat is when the footage changes depending on the beat of the background sound, we see this editing technique being used in the good, the bad and the ugly at 6.25, as you can see each shot is place on the beat this creates pace and makes it a lot more entertaining for the audience to watch, the main reason is the audience want the soundtrack in the background to match the feeling they are wanting.
